Apparently environmentalists want you to do more than eat tofu and use energy saving light bulbs. In an attempt to educate kids and adults alike on the environment, video game developer Red Redemption has released a new game that forces players to save the world. Gamers will navigate through the exciting world of carbon emissions, recycling and pollution. The game aptly titled ‘Fate Of The World’ hopes to raise awareness in groups of people that aren’t normally forced to confront these types of issues. So far, the game has been praised by other developers, but the title probably won’t sell out anytime soon. While the idea itself is noble, avid gamers probably won’t come anywhere near it. Everything about ‘Fate Of The World’ is completely predictable. If the gamer makes the ‘right decision’ the world will be safe, and how exciting is that when compared to the prospect of seeing the earth go up in flames?
If the description offered by Red Redemption is at all indicative of what players can expect, then it is safe to say that the action is limited and the storyline, though all encompassing, is severely limited. In ‘Fate Of The Worlds,’ there are no real character interactions, so gamers won’t be able to invest into it emotionally. Using popular PC based games like “The Sims” and “Real Estate Tycoon” as a jumping off point, Red Redemption hopes that gamers will be receptive to the idea of controlling the ‘fate’ of a large group – this one being the entire planet. Unfortunately, the people that want to save the world are the ones that actually leave their homes, while people who play video games are looking honest to goodness action packed entertainment.
